Director, Bright Box Makerspace
BA Philosophy, Religion and Ethics
2018
Kristie uses the skills she built up throughout her degree to lead a third sector organisation, providing learning opportunities in under-resourced communities.

What are your main responsibilities?

I'm a Director for the organisation. We work in the third sector, providing learning opportunities in under-resourced communities, focussing on employability, skills and creativity.  My role spans strategy, finance, funding, impact and evaluation. No two days are the same!

Briefly outline any previous roles:

I started as an intern for the organisation when it was in its start-up phase. This was during my Masters. For Brightbox, I've worked in roles including grant writer and impact lead, before becoming a director.

How has your Philosophy degree and your time at the University of Sheffield helped you in your career?

It's helped massively. During my Philosophy degree, I honed the ability to form well-constructed arguments, which I regularly use in my job. It was this skill that landed me the internship in the first place! Not to mention skills in negotiation, logic, and experience of research. All are such important skills in the third sector.

What career advice would you give to a student interested in studying Philosophy?

It might not be clear to you where your career will go but you don't have to have it all figured out yet. The skills you will learn will be invaluable to your career and there will inevitably be some unexpected twists and turns along the way. If you want to study philosophy, go for it! While you're at university, take every opportunity that comes your way, and if you have any interest in the third sector, join Enactus Sheffield!
