2 June 2012 - SARG holds second IARP international scientific advisory group meeting |
The international scientific advisory group for SARG's IARP project met with our researchers at the KBS conference in Stavanger, Norway. The meeting addressed SARG's on-going work to update the Sheffield Alcohol Policy Model to better account for local alcohol availability and long-term individual and population trends. We are grateful to Norman Giesbrecht, Gerhard Gmel, Tom Greenfield and Tim Stockwell for their time and contributions. |
15-17 May 2012 - Dr John Holmes and Dr Jane McLeod attend the 2nd Plenary Meeting of the ALICE RAP project |
![]() The 2nd plenary meeting of the ALICE RAP project was held in Newcastle, UK, and saw partners and stakeholders from all over Europe meet to discuss project progress and plans. SARG science writer, Dr Jane McLeod presented the first draft of Work Area 3's report, synthesising multidisciplinary evidence on the determinants of potentially risky substance use and gambling. |

Professor Alan Brennan and Dr John Holmes went to London to give evidence to Members of Parliament on the Health Select Committee, regarding HM Government's recently published alcohol strategy (see below). They answered questions on the scientific basis for SARGs alcohol policy evidence - see section between mins 31-58. |
23 March 2012 - HM Government announces minumum unit alcohol pricing to be introduced |

Reacting to the report SARG researcher Dr John Holmes said: "Our evidence suggests a 40p minimum unit price will be an effective measure for beginning to reduce the damage alcohol causes to society and individuals. Although various public health groups have recommended higher minimum prices, the government's proposal is a significant step forward in efforts to reduce alcohol-related harm".
