3-9 June 2012 - SARG researchers attend KBS conference

Researchers from SARG attended the 38th Annual Alcohol Epidemiology Symposium of the Kettil Bruun Society in Stavanger, Norway.

The following draft papers were presented:

15 April 2012 - ALICE RAP project publishes Alcohol Policy Paper

Prior to their 2nd Plenary Meeting in Newcastle, the ALICE RAP project published an important policy paper, Alcohol - The Neglected Addiction, which was reported widely in the press.

17 April 2012 - Dr John Holmes presents SARG research to Local Government Association

Along with other leading alcohol researchers and strategists, Dr John Holmes attended a conference entitled A Glass Half Full?, organised by the Local Government Association.  The event explored the role of councils in ensuring successful reform and improved health outcomes for their communities and discussed the impact of the Government’s Alcohol Strategy.

17 April 2012 - SARG researchers give evidence to Health Select Committee at the House of Parliament

Professor Alan Brennan and Dr John Holmes went to London to give evidence to Members of Parliament on the Health Select Committee, regarding HM Government's recently published alcohol strategy (see below).

They answered questions on the scientific basis for SARGs alcohol policy evidence - see section between mins 31-58.

23 March 2012 - HM Government announces minumum unit alcohol pricing to be introduced

SARG 's research informs HM Government's alcohol strategy which proposes a minimum unit price for alcohol

Reacting to the report SARG researcher Dr John Holmes said: "Our evidence suggests a 40p minimum unit price will be an effective measure for beginning to reduce the damage alcohol causes to society and individuals. Although various public health groups have recommended higher minimum prices, the government's proposal is a significant step forward in efforts to reduce alcohol-related harm".

24th January 2012 - SARG researchers give evidence to Scottish Parliament on minimum pricing

Prof. Alan Brennan and Dr. John Holmes gave evidence to the Scottish Parliament’s Health and Sport Committee as part of the scrutiny of the Alcohol Minimum Pricing Bill. SARG’s update of its Scottish adaptation of the Sheffield Alcohol Policy Model will be published in the coming days and will be used by the Scottish Government to aid selecting the minimum price for a unit of alcohol in Scotland.
