Undergraduate courses at the School of Clinical Dentistry
Our courses help you develop the clinical, scientific and patient skills you need to stand out as a rounded professional. You'll learn from internationally respected experts and develop your professional skills in a real working environment. It's why our graduates are so successful – within six months of graduating almost all of our students have found work in the profession or opportunities for further study.
World class and down-to-earth
We're one of the UK's top dental schools, with a formidable reputation for teaching and research. We're consistently ranked among the top five dental schools in the country by both the Independent and Complete 2012 university guides. That means you learn from leading experts and have cutting-edge dental technologies at your disposal.
But we get to know our students, too. This is a friendly learning community so you'll never feel lost in the crowd. Your tutors will provide regular feedback on all your work and they'll motivate you to be the best you can be. Throughout, you'll receive one-to-one support from your personal tutor, and we have a staff-student forum where you can tell us what you think of your course.
It could explain why our students are so happy. In the 2011 National Student Survey, 95 per cent of our students said they were 'satisfied' or 'very satisfied' with their course.
Give yourself the edge
Central to both courses is our Outreach Training Programme. As you become more experienced, you'll go on placements in dental practices, dental access centres and other primary care settings throughout the region.
These placements give you the chance to treat a variety of patients and maximise your clinical and patient skills. They help bridge the gap between the lecture room and the professional world, giving you a head start over other graduates when you start looking for work.
You'll also have the opportunity to do an elective placement, where you spend up to four weeks in a healthcare setting anywhere in the world.
Not sure how you'll find that first job? Don't worry – our staff work with specialist advisers in the University's Careers Service to help you prepare thoroughly and make the right choices for you.
There are lots of career options open to you, from working in a general or private dental practice to becoming a university tutor, doing further specialist training or even working in the armed forces. Find out what our graduates are doing on our course pages (left).
Most of your teaching takes place in the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. We've just refurbished the hospital with a new wing for teaching and research, so you'll benefit from state-of-the-art teaching clinics, modern lecture rooms and a dedicated computer suite for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
A buzzing community
This is a sociable place to study. Staff and students mingle with each other in a shared common room and coffee lounge. And our student-run society SUDDS organises sports and social events where you can mix with students from all years.
You'll also be at the heart of one of the friendliest and most vibrant universities in the UK. We've been named University of the Year at the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards. And the Times Higher survey 2011 says we're the university most people would recommend to a friend.
