Undergraduate study in French
The French language is spoken by 270 million people worldwide – from arctic Canada, through Europe and Africa, to the islands of the south Pacific. French history and culture remain a key influence on the modern world – from fashion, cuisine and sport to the arts, philosophy and global politics.
At Sheffield we believe languages are about seeing as well as saying. Study French with us and you won't just become a confident user of a different language. You'll be a confident citizen of Europe. You'll understand the world and its people in a different and better way.
Up there with the best
Join us and you'll be joining one of the top departments in the field. Among French departments in the UK, our staff are second only to Oxford in terms of world-leading research. This feeds through into our excellent teaching.
And it's not all lectures and textbooks. We've been teaching French for more than 100 years – but Sheffield is at the forefront of innovation in language teaching. Our online learning technologies mean you can practise your language skills and get immediate, automated feedback. At the same time, you'll have a personal tutor offering face-to-face support.
So develop your skills at Sheffield with teaching staff and resources that are up there with the best. And you'll soon be up there with the best too.
Spend a year abroad
Take one of our French degrees and you'll spend your third year living and learning abroad. You can choose from ten destinations in France – from Versailles near Paris, to Valenciennes in the north and Perpignan in the south.
Or there's the beautiful French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. You could go to Quebec. Some of our students have even arranged their own years abroad, elsewhere in French-speaking Europe or Africa.
Wherever you go, your French will come on in leaps and bounds. You'll grow stronger and more independent, and make new friends. And going by our students' past experiences, you'll probably have the time of your life too.
The future is yours
Our French graduates enter the jobs market with a formidable degree which opens doors. As well as your precious fluency in a modern language – still a sought-after commodity in the jobs market – your French degree at Sheffield will nurture some of the transferable skills that employers value most highly.
These are great communication skills, critical and analytical thinking, a flexible approach to study and work, and a professional attitude, with broad knowledge and understanding of the wider world.
Figures for 2011 show 75 per cent of our alumni employed in graduate jobs six months after graduating. This puts us comfortably in the UK's top 10 among French departments for employability – above many other highly rated universities including Warwick and Oxford.
Somewhere to belong
As part of the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics we can offer you great learning facilities and a huge range of options to study French with another language.
But as a department in our own right we're small enough to care. French at Sheffield is a close-knit community with a great sense of togetherness and friendship.
This means a student society – Le Cercle Français – that's buzzing with French-flavoured activities like film nights, cabaret, wine and cheese evenings, quizzes, karaoke and a trip to Paris in the spring. It means a spectacular annual highlight in the French play.
It means studying French at Sheffield isn't just an academically outstanding experience. It's also a journey of social and personal development that'll stay with you forever. And it's a lot of fun too.
