||£1.2 million award from EPSRC
The Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering is pleased to announce that Professor S A Billings, Professor V Kadirkamanathan, Dr Z Q Lang, Dr D Coca, Professor M Balikhin and Dr H L Wei have been awarded £1.2 million from EPSRC for the renewal of their existing Platform Grant from 2010 to 2015 for the project 'System Identification and Information Processing for Complex Systems'.
The grant will allow a continuation of investigations into system identification and analysis methods for complex systems focussed on applications in stem cell dynamics, Drosophila visual processing, diffuse optical tomography of brain, reaction diffusion and crystal growth processes, and the modelling of solar terrestrial systems.

||€1.95 million award from European Research Council
The Centre for Signal Processing and Complex Systems based in ACSE is pleased to announce that Steve Billings has been awarded Euros 1.95 million for an Advanced Investigator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for 'Nonlinear System Identification and Analysis in the Time, Frequency, and spatio-Temporal Domains'. This new grant will provide support for four new RA's and 3 new RS's over the five year period 2009-2014. The new award adds to Steve Billings grant capture of £3.7 million since 2005.

||Los Alamos and UCSD visit
Dr Z Q Lang recently visited the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in USA for three weeks. During this visit, in collaboration with the scientists at LANL and UCSD, Dr Lang conducted a wide range of experimental work and studied the application of fault detection and location techniques developed at Sheffield to multi-degree-of-freedom structural systems.
