New academic year, new Students’ Union!

Restaurant in new SU BuildingWork on the new Students’ Union Building is well on track for completion by the start of the new academic year.

The bridge linking the Students’ Union to the Octagon re-opened in good time for exams and graduation, and it won’t be long before all the fantastic new facilities, as well as many old favourites such as New Leaf and the Students’ Union shop, are open for business.

The fifth floor of the new development will soon be available for booking for meetings and conferences. With a 100-seater restaurant serving a mix of contemporary British food and daily specials from around the world, four dedicated community outreach rooms, and conferencing facilities for up to 150 guests, it’s the perfect place for all kinds of events. To make a booking, call 0114 222 8822.

To find out more about what else will be in the new building – and outside – visit the project web pages.

Do you have diabetes and want to lose weight?

Person using diabetes testing kitResearchers from the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) are looking for people with diabetes and a high BMI to take part in a pioneering study – adults aged between 30 and 60 who have a BMI between 25 and 40.

The team is exploring the different ways of motivating people with type 2 diabetes and a high BMI to lose weight.

Evidence suggests that losing five per cent of your body weight, especially for those with type 2 diabetes, increases your chances of a better quality of life.

How to get help with interdisciplinary research on global issues

SIID work in AfricaThe University’s new research centre, The Sheffield Institute for International Development (SIID), is working with partners all over the world to tackle some of the major challenges facing society today, from sustainable growth to social inequality.

Dr Johan Oldekop, for example, is working with local Amazonian communities on deforestation, and Director of SIID, Professor Jean Grugel, wants to see more research like Johan’s.

She said: “We’d really like to work with colleagues from all faculties. We can help with interdisciplinary bids, with impact, and can provide a space for research. Please get in touch for a chat if you’d like to know more."
