International travel
The University of Sheffield is a world-leading organisation and we are committed to responding to the global climate emergency.
Our five-year Sustainability Strategy sets out our approach to international travel which is to discourage flying and encourage remote working and surface travel where possible.
Although it’s sometimes necessary to fly, there are other more sustainable options available to consider, especially when traveling to and from parts of Europe such as Eurostar.
Eurostar
The nearest Eurostar station to Sheffield is London St. Pancras. This is directly accessible from Sheffield station and can be reached in 2 hours.
From the Eurostar terminal at St. Pancras you can travel into France, Belgium and The Netherlands.
Flying
Sheffield has a number of airports within close proximity. The nearest local airport is Doncaster Sheffield (DSA) and the nearest airport served directly by train from Sheffield is Manchester (MAN).
Journey times for accessing airports by public transport or driving
Public transport journey times are from individual locations to Sheffield Station. Trams run directly from University of Sheffield to the Station, journeys take around 10 minutes and the trams run every 10–20 minutes.

Sustainability and air quality
Our key commitments to sustainability
The University understands that international travel may be a requirement for some members of staff, students and visitors but we encourage the use of alternatives to air travel wherever possible including:
- Online meetings and conferences
- Using Eurostar and rail to travel to parts of Europe which are accessible by train. This can cut your CO2 emissions by up to 90%
- Using rail for long distance journeys in the UK rather than internal flights
