Biography

My background is in public health microbiology. I have worked in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Botswana in water and sanitation programmes with a particular emphasis on hygiene behaviour and hand washing. My research has involved the combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods to understand the causes of diarrhoeal diseases in children.

I joined the University of Sheffield in 1996 as a systematic reviewer. I have worked as a clinical effectiveness reviewer and have undertaken systematic reviews on many topics including: computerised cognitive behaviour therapy, oral drugs for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography.

In 2003, I became the Managing Director of the ScHARR Technology Assessment Group (ScHARR-TAG). ScHARR-TAG undertakes reviews of the clinical and cost effectiveness of health care interventions for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). Health Technology Assessment Programme on behalf of a range of policy makers, including the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Research Interests

My research interests are in the use of systematic reviewing methods within health technology assessments, to support decision making. I have an interest in the issues around the systematic reviewing of mental health technologies and therapies.

Teaching Interests

My teaching interests lie in Systematic Reviews and Critical Appraisal.

I am interested in supervising research students in areas such as systematic review methodology and issues around the reviewing of cost effectiveness model parameters.

I am module coordinator for the Systematic Reviews and Evidence Synthesis: Introduction to Advanced Analysis Techniques module on the iHTA course. Link
