Following on from the hugely successful redevelopment of the Students' Union last year, the University of Sheffield is now planning to bring together the existing Students' Union with a newly refurbished University House, creating new and exciting space and top class facilities for students, staff and visitors in one single building - renamed the Students' Union building.
The new facility will be designed to complement the £5 million revamp which was carried out on the award-winning Students' Union last year and will help create a strong sense of community and belonging at the heart of the campus.
Home to a number of complementary services and facilities, provided by the Students' Union, the University of Sheffield and private operators, the new and integrated building will be designed to meet the needs of everyone on campus.
It will include services to support students such as welfare, activities and sport, and student administrative and guidance services; shops, cafes and restaurants; spaces for the whole University community to share, as well as improved accessibility for disabled students, staff and visitors.
It is anticipated that work will start on site during summer 2012. During refurbishment work on the current University House building, the majority of Students' Union services will be open for business as usual.
The award-winning Students' Union, which employs over 900 people and offers more than 250 sports clubs and societies, has constantly been reinventing itself and rebuilding since the construction of the Graves building in 1936, which now houses the Interval Café Bar.
Excluding last year's revamp, the last major rebuild on the Students' Union - which was voted number one in the country in the 2011 Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey- was in the early 1990s which added facilities like a 400-seat lecture theatre/cinema, informal study space, meeting rooms and catering facilities.
Professor Paul White, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at the University of Sheffield, said: 'The new facility is a fantastic demonstration of the University's commitment to providing its students and staff with the best possible university experience. Bringing together the existing Students' Union with a newly refurbished
University House to create a new and improved building reflects the strong partnership between the Students' Union and the University, for the benefit of both the student experience and the wider University community.'
Thom Arnold, President of the University of Sheffield's Students' Union, said: 'We're really pleased to be working in partnership with the University to develop this visionary facility. Providing an outstanding student experience is something the University and the Students' Union are fundamentally committed to and this project promises to further this experience by delivering improved services and facilities to students at the heart of the University campus.'
